Student taken into custody at Mexico Middle for bringing possible BB gun to school

According to a Facebook post made by the Mexico School District, a student was taken into custody on Wednesday afternoon.

“A student was taken into custody today at Mexico Middle School for having a small handgun on school premises. The report of this was made by another student. At no time were threats made or was there intent to use the gun.”

ABC 17 News has reached out to the Mexico Police Department and the Mexico School District. The school district confirmed that the Mexico Middle School principal emailed all of the the middle school parents about the incident.

The Mexico Police Department released the following press release:

“On Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at approximately 8:13AM, Mexico Public Safety was called to the Mexico Middle School by staff in reference to a student reportedly bringing a gun to school on a previous date. Investigation revealed that earlier in the week, a male 8th grade student showed another student the handle of what appeared to be a handgun in his backpack. MPSD took the 8th grader into custody and the building was checked by officers and staff. No gun was located on school property.

The student stated that the item seen in his backpack was a BB gun. MPSD is continuing the investigation, and has recovered a BB gun from a family member. The student was turned over to the Missouri Division of Youth Services. Mexico Public Safety will be referring the case to the 12th Circuit Court Juvenile Division when the investigation is complete.

At no time was anyone threatened and there were no injuries from the incident.”
