Cuonzo Martin’s $21 million contract released

University of Missouri men’s basketball coach Cuonzo Martin’s official contract was released Monday. This comes less than a week after Mizzou confirmed Martin as the team’s nineteenth coach.

The seven-year deal guarantees he will make $2.7 million his first year. Each year after that, his pay will increase $100,000. That means Martin is set to make $3.3 million in his seventh year with the team.

The contract total sits at $21 million dollars and includes perks like a country club membership, two cars and football tickets.

Martin also has the opportunity to add incentive bonuses if he gains special recognition for items like SEC Coach of the Year or has 12 conference wins. These incentives total up to $605,000.

The contract also includes what would happen if the university gives Martin the boot or Martin chooses to leave on his own terms.

The university will not be allowed to dissolve the contract in the first three years without cause, but if the school does in the fourth year, Martin could walk away with $6 million.

The contract also states Martin has the right to end the agreement at any time without cause by paying $10.5 million if he walks away before April 30 of next year.

If Jim Sterk loses his position as director of athletics during the first five years, Martin’s buyout would be cut in half.

If either Martin or the university terminates the contract with cause, neither will need to pay.

The contract was signed last week by Martin and interim chancellor Hank Foley.
