Man accused of shooting at Pettis County home with children inside

A Sedalia man will appear in Pettis County court next week after he’s accused of shooting into a home over the weekend.

Antonio M. Hurst, 32, of Sedalia was arrested by Pettis County deputies earlier this week.

Hurst was later identified by police as a suspect after a home in the 300 Block of East Cooper Street in Sedalia was hit by gunfire shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday.

A man living inside the residence told police the home had been struck at least three times. According to a probable cause statement obtained by ABC 17 News, three children were also inside the home at the time of the shooting.

The man told police he had argued with a mother of one of the children just hours before the gunfire.

After the fight, the man reported he received a phone call from the woman’s number, but another man was on the line. The subject told the victim he was part of the Mexican Mafia and was going to kill him. The man told police the person on the phone was the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

Responding officers reported a bullet passed through a front wall into the living room, where it lodged into the wall above a couch where a babysitter was sleeping. Another shot entered a bedroom where one of the children was sleeping.

Police identified one of the fired bullets discovered at the scene as coming from a .22 caliber gun.

The victim also identified a gold Buick SUV as the vehicle used in the shooting. According to police, the man told them the SUV was owned by the child’s mother.

The vehicle was later found in the 200 Block of South Missouri Avenue. Two women were inside the vehicle and taken to the Sedalia Police Department for questioning. One of the women was identified as the mother of the child who was reportedly staying at the home struck by gunfire.

She told police that Hurst was the gunman. The probable cause statement shows Hurst became upset with the man after he overheard the argument between the man and woman.

The woman then told police that Hurst drove to the man’s home. Police said she begged Hurst not to shoot the home because her child was inside.

During an interview at the Pettis County Jail, Hurst admitted to detectives that he had been in the vehicle, but didn’t commit the shooting.

Hurst said he was asleep before the shooting happened.

Pettis County prosecutors have charged Hurst with three felony counts of child endangerment, two felony counts of armed criminal action, two felony counts of unlawful use of a weapons, and one felony count of unlawful possession of a gun.

Hurst is scheduled to appear in Pettis County court for a hearing at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.
