Columbia Public Schools, JC Schools, Southern Boone cancel classes ahead of winter storm
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Columbia Public Schools, the Southern Boone School District, Helias High School and the Jefferson City School District have canceled classes Wednesday ahead of a storm set to blanket Mid-Missouri with potentially more than a foot of snow.
CPS sent out the alert at about 1 p.m. Tuesday. JC Schools posted a notice on the district website and Southern Boone announced its closing in a news release late Tuesday afternoon.
All MU Health Care clinics, laboratory, outpatient radiology and Mizzou Quick Care locations and Mizzou Urgent Care will be closed, according to a news release. Boone Health said in a news release it was closing several of its facilities, as well.
Lincoln University pre-emptively canceled classes Wednesday and Thursday this week and New Bloomfield School District said it will be virtual Wednesday, as well.
The university said in a Tuesday announcement that campus would close and classes are canceled except for classes already being held virtually. Students living on the main campus are being asked to move their cars by 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The campus cafeteria will be open for brunch and dinner, the university said.
Columbia College said it was canceling day classes Wednesday and closing campus facilities. The evening program will be held virtually.
The City of Columbia said Tuesday that it will have a 33-person plow crew report for work at 11 p.m. to treat roads as rain begins to change to sleet.
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for all of Central Missouri from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. Strong winds could sharply reduce visibility, forecasters say, and the storm will sweep in bitter cold temperatures.
Gov. Mike Parson also activated the National Guard to help amid the storm and its aftermath. One of their duties will be to help the highway patrol assist stranded drivers.
The Jefferson City government also said its offices will also be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
All Daniel Boone Regional Library locations will also be closed Wednesday and Thursday.
Lincoln's announcement was made a day after the University of Missouri said it will switch to all-virtual classes Wednesday and Thursday because of the predicted storm. MU is also moving its men's basketball game against Florida to 2 p.m. No tickets or parking permits will be required.
Forecasts say 8 to 14 inches of snow could fall on Mid-Missouri starting Tuesday night. The storm system will start Tuesday with rain before changing to snow overnight.
