Snow this weekend, could make March the snowiest month this season

This past winter was one of the warmest ever recorded in Mid-Missouri, as most of the winter was dealt a hand of spring temperatures. With that warm weather came a lack of snowfall across the region. To date, Mid-Missouri has only seen 1.6 inches of snow, which has placed it in the record books as the second-least snowiest winter on record during the winter months. A winter that was largely absent of Old Man Winter will make a return as we head into the weekend, and so will snow. This weekend, nearly two inches of snow is forecasted, and locally heavier amounts, are expected to fall. If this occurs, this will make March the snowiest month this season. ABC 17 dug into the numbers for you to find out just how common it is to see more snow during the month of March than during the winter months, and the answer is quite surprising. Since 1986, only two years have seen March with higher snowfall totals. Those years are 1990 and 1998; ironically they were also years with warm winters. Over the past 30 years, the snowiest month has been Feb. nearly 50 percent of the time, but lately that hasn’t been the case. Although we ended February as one of the least snowiest on record, for those who enjoy the snow, you’ll see some this weekend. With the snow this weekend, we will finally see some drought relief in areas that are already seeing a severe drought, which is not good as we head into the growing season. Stay tuned to ABC 17 News for the latest information on what to expect this weekend. .
