Man found guilty of assaulting a law enforcement officer

A Boone County man was found guilty of domestic assault and assault on a law enforcement officer Wednesday.

The jury did not find Charles Simcoe guilty of kidnapping.

In July 2016, Simcoe was accused of attacking a woman at her home in Sturgeon. Police said an officer arrived on scene and shot Simcoe after he pointed his gun, which later turned out to be a BB gun, at the officer.

The trial started around 1:15 p.m.

During the trial, the prosecution called four witnesses to the stand: a neighbor the abuse victim went to after the incident occurred; the victim; the Sturgeon chief of police, who was the officer that shot Simcoe; and a deputy who took pictures of the scene and the victim after the incident.

The prosecution also showed multiple items of evidence, including body-camera footage from the officer who shot Simcoe on the night of the incident.

Photos of the victim that were taken a few hours after the incident were also shown to the jury.

The prosecution argued that there was plenty of evidence against Simcoe.

The defense argued that Simcoe did not point the BB gun directly at the officer before the officer shot him and that the victim’s injuries were self-inflicted.

The jury started deliberations around 4:20 p.m. and decided on the verdict at 6 p.m.

The prosecution said that the trial would only last one day.
