Single-digit wind chills concern for students returning to school Wednesday morning

You’ll want to make sure the family is bundled up Wednesday morning, especially any students heading back to school from winter break.

Columbia Public Schools is resuming classes Wednesday and students will have to brave some single digit wind chills at the bus stops this morning.

As you head out the door you’ll notice a huge drop in temperatures from Tuesday. That means you won’t want to let your kids out of the house without proper clothing. They should be wearing multiple layers in order to keep warm.

If possible, parents should keep the kids out of the cold until the bus arrives.

While the extremely cold temperatures are the concern Wednesday, you’ll also want to make sure you’re prepared for a chance of snow starting Tuesday night.

ABC 17 News talked to some mid-Missouri firefighters who say it’s important to have your car prepped before the snow arrives.

Chief Ryan Reuter with the Cooper County Fire Protection District says, “Have some friction that you can put down on your tires, maybe its kitty litter or ice salt or something that can help you get through something that’s a slick situation. Stay off the roads.”

Firefighters also say to warm up your vehicles before you drive them, but don’t leave them unattended. ABC 17 News has already reported a number of stolen vehicles that were taken while they were warming up.

ABC 17 News is going to keep monitoring the changing conditions Wednesday and preparations for winter weather throughout the day.
