Missouri Zika cases hit 34

Another case of the Zika virus was confirmed in Missouri Monday.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, or DHSS, said this latest case brings the total number of travel-related cases to 34 for the state.

The case was found in a man who recently traveled to Mexico.

The World Health Organization declared Zika to no longer be a public health threat earlier this month. Due to this, DHSS said it would no longer send out announcements about each travel-related case unless prompted.

DHSS also said people who do plan to travel to Zika-affected areas should take precautions like wearing EPA-registered insect repellent, abstain from sex or use condoms for at least eight weeks after returning.

The CDC continues to recommend pregnant women avoid traveling to these areas to avoid possible birth defects.
