Thanksgiving charity dinner feeds hundreds in Columbia

Saturday marked the 18th year for the annual Destiny of Hope Harvest Dinner.

Glenn Cobbins, a community activist, started the Thanksgiving charity dinner the year he got out of prison. For years, the event was held at the Imani Mission Center.

“We served our first dinner on a door with two saw horses,” said Judy Hubbard, who is one of the original organizers of the Harvest Dinner. “It’s just grown every year and I think we served even more this year.”

The event was held at the Shiloh Christian Center and the Bliss Adult Day Care Center from 1 to 5 p.m. in Columbia.

Hubbard estimates they served or delivered about 800 Thanksgiving meals this year. Last November, volunteers served about 700 people.

“It’s just a good time for people to come together and for everybody to get to enjoy the holiday season.”
