Missouri Task Force 1 gets Kentucky assignment

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia-based urban search and rescue team Task Force 1 will help search the town of Mayfield, Kentucky, which was devastated by a tornado late Friday.

The task force said in a news release that it received the assignment at 7 a.m. Monday. The group arrived early Monday in Kentucky, the state hardest hit by the December tornado outbreak that also destroyed an Amazon warehouse in southern Illinois.

The tornadoes ripped through Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky and Tennessee. More than 60 people are confirmed dead in Kentucky. President Joe Biden is set to travel to the hardest-hit areas there Wednesday.

Officials have opened investigations into the Amazon warehouse collapse in Edwardsville, Illinois, where six workers died.

Task Force 1 got to Murray, Kentucky, at 3 a.m. Monday, according to the news release.

"The team is doing well and proud to be able to assist the citizens in Kentucky," the group said.
