Kami Chapa found out she was pregnant in 2013 while her and her husband vacationed in Turks and Caicos. Her son Hayden was born with a condition called Microlissencephaly. Similar to the disease babies born to mother with the Zika Virus, Kami said she’s never been tested and the CDC said she didn’t need to worry because Zika did not reach the Americas until 2015. Doctors told her Hayden’s condition was much more severe than microcephaly, not only was he born with a small head he also had no kneecaps and other complications. Kami and her husband Jason were told his life expectancy would be anywhere from 4-10 years. Last week, the family lost Hayden at just 3 yrs. old.

While the family gathered in a hospital room at Primary Children’s Hospital, Kami decided to sing a song with special meaning to her. “I’ve been practicing that song, grandma’s been wanting me to sing it at her funeral so I’ve been practicing and practicing and every time I’d get ready I’d play it and Hayden would be in his walker and every time it would come on he would stop what he was doing,” said Kami “I just knew when Jason asked me to sing that song I knew I had to, ’cause if I was going to do it for grandma, I had to do it for my son,” said Kami.

When the family returned from Primary Children’s on Thursday they came home to a beautiful sight of luminaries a group of advocates for the hospital lined up. Since the video’s launch last week, the Chapa’s have seen an influx of support from the community. In the Chapa’s Idaho Falls home, two large rubber tubs filled with food and clothing to help out the grieving parents. The family also received donations of over $12,000. The family said they hope to set up some sort of memorial to remember Hayden and also help out families going through a similar situation.
