Thursday’s storms, severe threat
Areas west of HWY 63 could pick up 1-2 inches of rain by Friday morning from storms which move through early Thursday morning and Thursday night. Local amounts up to 3 inches will be possible.
Warm, moist air is moving in ahead of a storm system in Kansas as low level winds increase overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning. This will cause storms to form north of I-70, along a warm front with additional storms moving in from Kansas, tracking northeast through Thursday morning. Once these move out, much of the day Thursday looks dry and warm before another line of storms moves in Thursday night.
This next line of storms will form ahead of a cold front and could bring severe weather as it moves into our western counties after 10 PM. As this line moves in, damaging straight line winds of 58 mph or greater will be the main threat with some large hail also possible. The tornado threat will decrease as the line moves into Mid-Missouri but can’t be completely ruled out for counties west of HWY 63. Heavy rain is also expected with the storms Thursday night, with highest rainfall rates west of HWY 63.
The line of storms will weaken as it moves east through the early morning hours Friday, with a few showers lingering east of HWY 63 through 10 AM. Skies will gradually clear from west to east as cooler air moves in for the end of the work week.
