MU fraternity already on probation for “previous alcohol incident” prior to hazing allegations
ABC 17 News has confirmed the MU fraternity accused of hazing was already on probation for a “previous alcohol incident.”
Kappa Alpha was suspended Monday due to a hazing incident. While university officials did not release specifics about the incident, the Columbia Police Department says officers responded last week to an assault report at 1301 University Avenue for a person from the house drinking to the point of being transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
According to Christian Basi, the Associate Director for the MU News Bureau, the MU’s Office of Greek Life and the Office of Student Conduct were aware of a “previous alcohol incident involving Kappa Alpha.”
Basi says the Office of Student Conduct investigated the incident and the following disciplinary actions were taken:
“University Disciplinary Probation: Kappa Alpha was placed on disciplinary probation through the end of the fall semester (Dec. 20, 2016). The fraternity was warned that any additional violation of University policy while on probation would result in more severe sanctions being imposed. Alcohol Education Program: Kappa Alpha members were required to attend an alcohol education program, “Raising the Bar for Greek Students,” which is provided by the MU Wellness Resource Center.”
ABC 17 News checked in with Columbia Police and they tell us they have no updates on the assault investigation.
As for further punishment, Basi tells ABC 17 News, “the Office of Student Conduct will conduct an investigation and determine if any further disciplinary action should be taken.
He adds, “I don’t have a timeline for when that will happen.”
