One in custody after crash, chase in north central Columbia

Police detained one person after he ran away from a car crash in north central Columbia Thursday night.

Officers told ABC 17 News they tried to start a traffic stop on the car traveling on Business Loop 70 around 9:30 p.m. Just after police turned on emergency lights to start the traffic stop, the car “lost control” as it turned onto Seventh Street, near Hickman High School, and crashed into a utility pole.

A man in the car ran away, while a female stayed behind. Officers later caught the man, whose name has not been released, near the First Assembly of God church.

The woman was able to walk towards an ambulance, who took her as a “precaution,” according to Columbia police.
