Brookfield police : No evidence of a crime after search for remains

The Brookfield Police Department says it has found no evidence of a crime at the scene of the search for possible remains.

The search started around noon on August 14 after a tip was received that a still born infant’s remains were buried in a yard on Canal Street in Brookfield, Missouri.

ABC 17 News received a tip Monday about police responding to reports of the buried remains in the Linn County city.

Police say they have contacted and interviewed the former residents of the property and there is no evidence a crime has occurred.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control were contacted for specialized resources and equipment including ground penetrating radar. Ground penetrating radar can be used for finding buried bodies.

Brookfield’s assistant police chief, Stuart Hughes, said investigators identified several areas of interest but found no remains, nor anything suspicious.

Neighbors tell ABC 17 News a woman and man lived in the house with “two or three” children as recently as last week. By Thursday, the say the house was vacant.

Assistant Chief Hughes says investigators did locate the family to ask questions about the case and to check on the family’s welfare.
