Senators McCaskill, Blunt comment on Dallas police shootings
Both U.S. senators from Missouri have released statements in response to the deadly shootings of five police officers in Dallas. The officers were among 12 officers and two civilians shot by what authorities call a sniper.
The shootings happened toward the end of a protest over this week’s deadly shootings of Aldon Sterling and Philando Castile, both by police officers.
The suspect in the Dallas shootings, who died during a standoff with police, has been identified as Micah Johnson of Mesquite, Texas.
Regarding the shootings in Dallas, Senator Claire McCaskill said the following this morning:
“I don’t have any words, only heartache, at these intolerable murders—murders of officers guarding a peaceful demonstration on the unconscionable loss of black lives. We must heal the gaping wounds in this country with trust and respect. And we have so much work to do.”
Senator Roy Blunt released the following statement: “Every day, our nation’s police officers run toward danger to keep our communities safe. And, every day, their families are left hoping and praying they will make it home. Todayis another day of far too many days when some of our first responders didn’t make it home.
“We, as a nation, join the families of these fallen heroes in grieving the loss of their loved ones. Our thoughts are with them, and with theofficers and bystanders who have been injured in this horrible premeditated attack. Violence and hate will not bring justice, they will only bring more tragedy and heartache to our communities.
“We should all reflect on how we can find a better path forward that honors and upholds our values as a nation.”
