Riot police sent in amid standoff at Poland-Belarus border

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Polish riot police are reinforcing Poland’s eastern border, a day after hundreds of migrants tried to storm across the razor-wire border fence from Belarus. Thousands of migrants still remained in the Belarussian side. Polish authorities say the situation on the border — which is also the eastern border for the 27-nation European Union and NATO — was calm Tuesday but after Monday’s border scrum they are bracing for any possibility. Poland says a large group of Belarusian forces is moving toward the migrants, who are camping out on the border in near-freezing weather. The border crisis has been simmering for months. Poland says Belarus’s authoritarian regime is encouraging migrants to illegally enter the EU.
