Murder charge dropped in Jon Spurling death investigation

The Howard County prosecutor has dropped charges against Zachary Jefferson, who had been accused of killing Jon Spurling in 2011.

No reason was given for the dismissal of charges.

At the time of the killing, Jefferson was married to Spurling’s ex-wife, and investigators claimed Jefferson was jealous of Spurling. Deputies arrested Jefferson in March 2014.

The dropped charges include murder and armed criminal action. Prosecutor Stephen Murrell says the investigation into Spurling’s death continues.

Howard County Sheriff Mike Neal also told ABC 17 News the investigation is “far from over.” He added that his detective was working on the case today.
