Groundbreaking ceremony for new veterans shelter in Columbia

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday morning for an emergency homeless shelter for veterans near the site of more permanent housing in central Columbia.

The new building will offer 32 temporary beds and can house women veterans along with their families.

The entire complex currently occupies 4.2 acres off the Business Loop just west of the I-70 connector, where the former Deluxe Inn used to sit. That is also where organizers have already built permanent apartments for vets.

The project has received multiple grants and tax credits from both local and state agencies including Veterans United, the Missouri Housing Department Commission, and the City of Columbia.
