Dry weather is a concern for 4th of July holiday

With fourth of July around the corner the dry weather mid Missouri has experienced makes fighting fires tough.

Boone County Fire Protection District says “we need more moisture, keeps down the fires… drier grass makes it easier for spot fires since you don’t know where the fireworks are going to land.”

Gale Blomenkamp, Assistant Fire Chief, told ABC 17 news that it’s not uncommon for them to receive a lot of fire related calls around this time of year.

However, staffing levels will remain the same. Blomenkamp says, “we prepare just like we do in the winter with road conditions… we know what to expect.”

Popular calls that the Fire Protection District gets range from minor burns, minor explosion injuries, and hand injuries.

A safety tip the Fire Protection District likes to tell residents is to always have a bucket of water nearby to assure the firework is completely out. Out of all the fireworks most likely to cause harm are firecrackers and sparklers.

Unincorporated areas of Boone County allow fireworks, but inside the district of Columbia fireworks are illegal.
