Fulton police chief reflects on career ahead of retirement

FULTON, Mo. (KMIZ)

The city of Fulton will soon begin its search for a new police chief as its current chief prepares for retirement.

On Oct. 28, Chief Myers announced his plans to retire, effective Dec. 3. Myers said that it was not an easy decision to make.

"I've told people, it was a very tough decision. I don't look at this as a job, actually as a job or career it's been my life," Myers said.

Myers said that he will miss working with the community and mentoring younger officers.

"You see them grow and learn and become really good police officers," Myers said.

His career started in Montgomery County before he moved to Fulton to work for the MUSTANG Drug Task force. He eventually became chief of the Fulton Police Department in 2002.

Myers said that one of his most memorable cases during his time in Fulton was the case of Carl DeBrodie. The case involved the death of a man with disabilities. Fulton police found DeBrodie's body encased in concrete in a storage unit in April 2017.

"Those kind of cases you'll never forget, they'll stick with you forever," Myers said.

Anthony R. Flores, Anthony R. K. Flores and Sherry Paulo are in prison for their involvement in DeBrodie's death.

"I think there was a lot more people that should have been prosecuted in that," Myers said. "It's challenging not only for me as a chief but because my officers, my detectives, and all of the other people that worked so hard on this case."

City leaders have certain qualities in mind as they prepare to find the next police chief.

"They have to have the right temperament, the right attitude, the right disposition, the right training," City Administrator Bill Johnson said.
