City demolishing nuisance property in Central Columbia
This week, crews are demolishing a dilapidated home the City of Columbia has deemed a “nuisance.”
The property is located in Central Columbia at 608 McBaine Avenue.
The Columbia City Council voted on June 6 to authorize demolition of the home. The council also authorized a special taxbill against the property.
According to a report from the Columbia City Council, the property is vacant and uninhabitable. Some neighbors say the home is devaluing the cost of their property.
Demolition is expected to cost around $12,000. Once it is complete, the bill will be sent to the owner of the home. If the owner does not pay it, then the bill is assessed to the property, so the city will eventually get their money back.
ABC 17 News crews were on scene Monday and spoke to Bruce Martin, a senior building inspector with the City of Columbia. He says he expects the entire demolition to take about two days.
If you believe there is a nuisance property in your neighborhood, Martin says to make an online complaint with the Office of Neighborhood Services. That office will then do a curbside inspection to determine if any violations are being made.
