Gas leak closes road in downtown Columbia

A road in downtown Columbia shut down Friday morning for a gas leak. It is reported Lee Hills Hall, which houses the Columbia Missourian, was also evacuated.

ABC 17 News learned from city fire officials that construction crews hit a 2 inch natural gas line around 10:06 a.m. The leak has since stopped, but they did one final sweep before giving the all-clear.

ABC 17 News saw at least one firetruck blocking Elm Street by Ninth Street. The leak appeared to be coming from the new Shakespeare’s Pizza restaurant, which is due to open this August.

Our crews reported fire, police and Ameren all responded and the leak was extremely loud.

ABC 17 News has reporters at the scene. We’ll update this story as we learn more.
