Cole County commissioner Jeff Hoelscher discusses decision to not lower flags

Cole County commissioner Jeff Hoelscher discussed his decision to vote not to lower flags at Cole County buildings in honor of the Orlando terror attack victims.

Hoelscher said he stands by his vote made on Monday.

Hoelscher said he voted the way he did based on policy in place and past history. He also said commissioners voted not to lower the flags following the deadly school shooting at Sandy Hook in Newton, Connecticut.

You’ll recall after Sunday’sdeadly terrorist attack in Orlando, President Obama proclaimed flags outside public buildings should be flown at half-staff until sunset Thursday.

Cole County leaders decided not to lower the flags at their county buildings Monday. On Tuesday, public outcry over the decision lead commissionerKris Scheperle to change his vote, shifting the 2 to 1 vote in favor of lowering the flags.
