Mid-Missouri authorities confirm no threat to area following Orlando Terrorist Attack
Local law enforcement in Mid-Missouri say there is no credible threat in the area, but still warn residents to be cautious.
According to Cole County Sheriff Department, they’ve been given no direction from a Federal level on any threats to the area. Cole County Sheriff John Wheeler told ABC 17 news that they are in contact with FBI and Homeland Security offices.
President Obama addressed the nation on Sunday afternoon saying, “We know enough to say that this was an act of terrorism, and an act of hate.”
50 people dead, 53 wounded after Omar Mateen, 29 years old, opened fire at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando. The attacks are considered the worst in the history of the United States.
Former Homeland Security Coordinator Paul Fennewald told ABC 17 news that “the more sensational, more media coverage that they can get the more horrific, the better off they like it.”
Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill said in a statement, “I’m heartbroken. And it’s a familar feeling. It’s a depressing thing when such tragic events become so routine…” Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler said, “…This is an unnerving reminder of the devastation extremists ideologies can bring to our shores and the urgent need to confront this threat head on.”
Fennewald advises that residents should “continue to travel, and go about their day to day, going to the mall going to a nightclub, school, church, it’s who we are.”
Investigations for Terror attacks could take years, with all the amounts of sources that need to be contacted.
