As Mid-Missouri starts the hottest weekend of the year so far, parents and pet owners are being reminded to not leave children or animals in cars.
By this time last year, four children had died after being left in cars. So far this year, 11 children across the country have died so far this year after being left in a hot car. The latest was on Wednesday in Louisiana. The father of the girl said he had planned to drop her off at day-care but had a change of plans.
Safety advocates say this type of thing usually happens when parents are distracted or have a change of routine. The suggest all parents – and pet owners – leave something in the backseat you know you’ll need. Whether a phone, wallet, purse, something that will make you turn around and look and reach into the back seat and see your child or pet.
There is pending legislation in Missouri that would protect people from punishment if they break a window of a car in order to get a child out in hot weather.
In 70 degree weather, temperatures in a car can reach up to 90 degrees in just 10 minutes. in 80 degree weather, the inside temperature of a car can reach 100 degrees. In 90 degree weather, like Mid-Missouri will have this weekend, the inside temperature of a car can reach up to 110 degrees in just 10 minutes.
Experts say the car works like a greenhouse, absorbing the heat and sunshine and keeping it in the car, causing the inside temperature to rapidly increase.
