Case review scheduled for driver in deadly head-on collision

A case review hearing has been scheduled for a woman accused of driving drunk and causing a deadly collision in Miller County.

Carol Elwyn is charged with involuntary manslaughter and assault for the crash which killed two people and injured a third.

The collision happened shortly before midnight on Highway 54 at Walnut Grove Road. According to investigators, Carol Elwyn, 62, was drunk and driving the wrong way when she hit a car head-on.

Dalton Delong, 17, was driving the second car. He was taken to University Hospital, where at last check he is in serious condition. His passengers, Travis Davolt, 38, and Dominic Delong, 12, died at the scene.

The charges against Elwyn include two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of assault. Elwyn is currently in the Miller County Jail.

According to court documents, Elwyn told a state trooper she had been on her way home from her job as a bartender at Shawnee Bluff Winery. The trooper claimed there was a strong smell of intoxicants, but Elwyn claimed she hadn’t been drinking. After consenting to give a breath sample for testing, the trooper says Elwyn claimed she had chest pain, and wouldn’t give a valid sample. Medics then took two blood samples, which are being processed to determine if there was alcohol present and, if so, how much.

Elwyn’s case review is scheduled for June 22.
