Police identify man arrested after vehicle and foot chase in central Columbia Wednesday

UPDATE: A man is in the Boone County jail Thursday after he was arrested in connection to a chase through central Columbia Wednesday.

Police said they arrested 29-year-old Denico Crawley in the1000 block of West Stewart Road Wednesday.

Police say Street Crimes Detectives were driving south on Providence Road just north of Locust Street when they saw Crawley driving in the right lane.

Street Crimes Detectives apparentlyknew Crawley had a revoked driver’s license. Police say detectives tried tostop the vehicle near Providence and Elm Street, but Crawley refused to stopand continued to travel west on Stewart Road.

Police say Crawley drove into a yard in the 300 block of West Boulevard, struck a treeand caused damage to the yard.

Crawley then apparently returned to the roadway headingwest on Stewart Road, then left the roadway again as he drove intoa yard in the 1000 block of West Stewart Road. Crawley damaged the yardand a bush.

Crawley then reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot. Police say a CPDK9 was called to the area to track for Crawley and the K9 located himhiding in some bushes just north of the 1000 block of West Stewart Road.

Police say Crawley had over $1,000 in his pants pockets at the time of his arrest.

They say a Crime Scene Investigator searched Crawley’s vehicle and foundapproximately 8.03 grams of methamphetamine in a cigarette package on thefront passenger floorboard and a digital scale with white residue thattested positive for cocaine.

Police say officers back-tracked the pursuit routelooking for anyevidence thrown from the vehicle. They say officers located a baggie of crackcocaine weighing approximately 1.34 grams, and a baggie of marijuanaweighing approximately 2.27 grams in a yard and curbside on Stewart Road ashort distance from the West Boulevard intersection.

Police say Street CrimesDetective also located a black stolen .40 caliber Glock in the 600 block ofStewart Road as well as an extended Glock Brand magazine and ammunition in the same block range.

Denico Crawley was arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of a motor vehicleaccident, operating a motor vehicle while licenserevoked, resisting or interfering with an arrest, operating a motor vehicle in a careless and
imprudent manner, distribution of a controlled substance, and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.

ORIGINAL STORY: One person ended up in police custody following a chase in central Columbia Wednesday afternoon.

At around 2:30 p.m., officers with the Street Crimes Unit noticed a vehicle with invalid license plates in the area of Providence and Elm and tried to stop it, but the driver kept going. The chase ended in the area of West Boulevard and Stewart Road when the suspect driver crashed into a tree. The driver then tried to run away but was caught.

Police have yet to reveal the name of the driver involved. No injuries were reported during the chase or crash.
