Cole County Sheriff’s Department warning about a warrant scam

The Cole County Sheriff’s Department told ABC 17 today, that in two days alone, they have received over a dozen calls about a scam involving warrants.

The suspects are identifying themselves as Deputy Gary or Greg, telling victims that they have active warrants and have to pay up or else they will go to jail.

Cole County Sheriff’s Department told ABC 17 that the suspects will ask for the victim to pay using a pre-paid card or money order.

Although we don’t know the amount of money they are asking for, Cole County Sheriff’s Department says it’s not a large amount typically.

Sheriff’s Department says they will not call people and tell them they have a warrant, they will show up at your house or come get you.

Jefferson City also is experiencing a similar problem like Cole County is.

Scammers are leaving messages on the victims phone telling them to call a certain number, claiming it’s the police department.

In Jefferson City alone there are 8 active scams going on right now, according to the Better Business Bureau.
