Jefferson City neighborhood sees string of car break-ins

Jefferson City police are investigating a string of car break-ins.

At least fifteen thefts were reported Thursday alone in one area of the city, primarily off Boonville Road and Hayselton Drive.

Andrea McFarland, who lives on Boonville Road, said it was a normal morning Thursday until her husband went outside to take one of their children to daycare.

“He said, ‘well I think we were broke into,’ McFarland said. “So of course, I run down to check things out. We check all our cars; two of our cars were locked. Two of our cars were unlocked. And both of the unlocked cars had both glove boxes and everything had been gone through. Stuff was all over the place.”

McFarland said luckily nothing was taken from their vehicles.

“It’s extremely unsettling, especially since we have children. It just makes me very nervous that if we didn’t hear them getting into our cars or you know just didn’t realize that someone was getting into our cars, how easy it would be for them to get into our home,” McFarland said.

Next-door neighbor Ann Ponder was also hit by thieves the same night.

“They pretty much ransacked the car,” Ponder said. “My husband, when he got into his truck, he said like he felt he had been violated.”

Jefferson City police told ABC 17 News there were some thefts in the area, but all car doors were unlocked.

“Makes me want to make sure I lock my vehicles at night,” Ponder said. “And if, and even if I do lock them, make sure there’s nothing valuable in there.”

“We are gonna lock all of our doors,” McFarland said. “We have the flood light. Obviously, that didn’t scare anyone off. So my husband and I have decided that we should put a camera up outside as well.”

Both residents said even though it is a nice neighborhood, this is not the first time there have been car break-ins there.

Jefferson City police said they have no suspects at this time.
