One part of Scott Blvd. opens, another shuts down
Workers are getting ready to close a different part of Scott Boulevard in south Columbia this weekend and reopen another one ahead of schedule.
On Friday they are closing a section between the roundabout at Vawter School Road and Sawgrass Drive. It will stay like that until late summer. Drivers will still be able to use the roundabout that joins Scott Blvd. to Vawter School Rd.
On Sunday, crews will reopen the stretch from Leighton Drive to Route KK. It has been closed since last August, as construction workers widen Scott Boulevard, add new stormwater runoff features, paint bike lanes and include a left turn lane for drivers entering the several subdivisions on that road. The work also features a two-lane roundabout at Scott Blvd. and Route KK, near the future Beulah Ralph Elementary School.
The new road closure will primarily block residents in the Copperstone subdivision from exiting or entering from the Scott Blvd. connection. Instead, residents there will only be able to use Frontage Drive to get in and out. Stephen Vyskocil moved to Copperstone in August, when work began just south of him. He said he looks forward to what Scott Blvd. will eventually look like, but said the ongoing construction has wearied him.
“This is a great area to live,” Vyskocil told ABC 17 News Thursday. “And I think that [construction] may be preventing some people, or halting their interest in wanting to buy a home here just because of traffic concerns.”
Columbia Public Works did not provide a set date for when work will finish.
