Chemical contained following truck crash near Huntsville

Workers have contained a chemical spill after a semi truck carrying magnesium hydroxide crashed near Huntsville. The crash happened on Route C Monday morning.

Before the crash, the truck’s tires caught fire, prompting the driver to pull over. However, due to the soft shoulder, the trailer overturned, spilling the magnesium hydroxide. No injuries have been reported.

After the crash, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department kept people a half mile from the crash as a precaution. The spill was not classified as hazardous, though, and no evacuations were ordered.

Magnesium hydroxide, also known as milk of magnesia, is commonly used in antacids and laxatives. It can cause irritation if it comes into contact with the skin or eyes, and if swallowed, can cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
