Driver falls asleep at wheel, flips car

A driver fell asleep at the wheel while driving eastbound on I-70 early Sunday morning.

The driver and her passenger were able to get out of the car by themselves. They were not taken to the hospital. Missouri State Highway Patrol says they only had some bumps and bruises from the incident.

According to MSHP, the driver fell asleep while driving east on I-70 near the Midway exit. She began drifting into the center median. When she woke up she over corrected to the right. The Nissan Altima flipped, stopping on its hood in the grassy area between the on-ramp and I-70.

No other cars were involved in the crash.

Boone County Fire, MSHP, and a Boone County Deputy were on scene as well as a University Hospital ambulance.

The on ramp was partially closed while crews were on scene. The BCFD redirected traffic onto the shoulder of the on ramp.

The driver was cited for careless and imprudent driving.
