Jefferson City voters will soon decide on renewal of the half cent sales tax

Jefferson City Council Member’s unanimously voted to support the approval of renewing the half cent sales tax for the August 2nd ballot.

The ordinance would allow voters to vote on whether or not to renew the half cent capitol improvements sales tax from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2022.

The tax has been in place since the 1980’s according to Mayor Carrie Tergin, and has played a important role in the city.

Over the five year period voters would see improvements to sidewalks, stormwater drains, roads, intersections, remodel of Fire Station 2, new police equipment, emergency sirens, East High Street, Cherry Street to Vetter Lane.

Throughout the taxing period of five years, 25 million dollars would be used for these projects and Mayor Tergin believes it will only continue to benefit the city. ” It’s really the core of what happens in our city, it’s a lot of the public safety, it’s our infrastructure it’s a lot of things that are critical for keeping our community where we have it now.”

According to the Mayor, there are no opposition groups, and the renewal tax is widely accepted throughout the Jefferson City Community.
