Belgium attack prompts questions about state building security

The terror attack in Belgium on Tuesday is renewing questions and concerns about security in the U.S., especially at national and state sites, parks, and monuments.

Security at Missouri buildings like the Capitol and the Truman building has raised questions in the past. Metal detectors were installed at the Capitol following the 9/11 terror attacks, but were sometime later.

Our ABC 17 News crews spoke with employees who work in Truman building and Capitol building. One employee in the Truman building said the idea of having metal detectors in the building never crossed her mind. Another said he thinks having some sort of security could have helped situations in the past be avoided. Another employee who has worked both in the Truman and Capitol said “maybe we just take it for granted”.

One employee in the Capitol building says she knows a number of people who conceal carry in the Capitol. She says she feels safer knowing they are skilled and qualified with their weapons. She also thinks it would create a bottleneck affect considering how many people visit the Capitol daily.

The building was equipped with metal detectors after the September 11th attacks but were later removed because of budget cuts.
