Moberly police arrest 18-year-old after report of shots fired

An 18-year-old man was arrested Tuesday night after Moberly police responded to a report of shots fired.

Cmdr. Troy Link said police were called to a home in Moberly about 9 p.m.

Police spoke to an 18-year-old and a woman at the home and as they were leaving, police found evidence that shots had been fired.

The two people were walking away from the house when police called out to them. One of them started running and hid under a car, Link said.

Police said the man dropped an unloaded gun while he was fleeing. The gun was found after the man was detained.

Link said police believe that the man was shooting at a tree for target practice. It is illegal to discharge a gun within city limits.

He also said the man should not have had the gun and police believe that it was stolen.

Police did not arrest a woman who was with the man.

The man was arrested on charges of unlawful use of a weapon, armed criminal action, resisting arrest, tampering with evidence and receiving stolen property.

According to a news release, the man, who was not identified until charges have been filed, posted bond and was released.

The investigation is continuing.
