Day one of Thompson murder trial comes to a close

The first day of a Mid-Missouri murder suspect’s trial came to a close Monday after officials heard from some witnesses.

19-year-old Charles Thompson is charged with the February 2015 killing of Johnny Evans in Jefferson City.

Opening statements outlined what each side is arguing happened on February 15 , 2015.What is not in dispute is that Johnny Evans was fatally shot in his High Street apartment that day.

The state is arguing that Charles Thompson along with two others broke into Evans’ apartment to steal money and marijuana.They claim that Thompson shot Evans twice with a 3.8 pistol.

But the defense argued today there was no proof that Thompson was the shooter.They argued that Vincent Smith and another suspect were rolling over on Thompson as they themselves were facing prison time.

First to take the stand was Evans’ neighbor and former partner.She testified that Evans walked into her apartment on February 15 and said, “I’ve been shot.”

Those were the last words Evans would say as he was later pronounced dead at Capitol Region Medical Center.

The court also heard from the first responders who described the scene.

Later in the week, the defense will be calling EMS, investigators and Thompson’s alleged accomplices. The trial is expected to last several days.
