Police find vehicles hit by gunfire at Jefferson City park
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Shots were fired at a Jefferson City park late Wednesday, police say.
Officers found more than 16 spent casings after being sent at about 11 p.m. to McClung Park, the Jefferson City Police Department said in a news release. Police also found a .40-caliber handgun.
No one was injured, police said, but shots hit several vehicles. Several people investigators contacted refused to provide information, according to the release.
Jefferson City resident Kimm Bland said that she brings her grandchildren to MCclung park occasionally, but she won't continue if people choose to bring gun violence to the park.
The park has set hours, but parks and recreation allow people to rent the pavilion space in the park, which is where the disturbance occurred last night, Jefferson City Police Department Lt. David Williams said. The park's Google listing says it is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Williams said the shooting likely started with some kind of disturbance.
"Whenever you have a large gathering of people, there's a potential for some type of disturbance," Williams said. "Not every occurrence that we have at our park result in gunfire and so in this case we definitely want to take a close look at what happened. See if we can determine who was responsible and of course get them in custody".
