Tornadoes seem to hit some Mid-Missouri areas more often
As part of “Tornado Alley,” Missouri is one of the most vulnerable states to tornado activity. A look at tornadoes that have hit Mid-Missouri over the years shows some areas appear to be more prone than others.
Monroe County has seen 16 tornadoes since 1985, topping the list for central Missouri. Over that same time period, Pettis County saw 14 tornadoes, and Phelps County reported ten.
Phelps and Pulaski are in the far southeastern part of the region, and history shows the strongest tornado activity seems to happen there. Those two counties alone have suffered through almost a third of all strong tornadoes in the region, meaning those ranked “3” or higher on the Fujita scale.
