This Week’s Wet and Stormy Forecast Will Be A Welcomed One for Mid-Missouri

Chances for heavy rain this week should come as good news for Mid-Missouri. After ending the year 2015 with a heavy rainfall event that resulted in major flooding throughout central and eastern Missouri, 2016 is off to a rather dry start. In fact, rainfall totals at Columbia Regional Airport are already about 3″ below average for this time of year.

On average, Columbia receives about 4.69″ of rainfall accumulation by March 6th. However, so far this year, a total of only 1.77″ has been measured. These dry conditions have come at a cost, particular for areas west of Highway 63, whom have endured multiple days where Red Flag Warnings have been issued.

Forecast models are indicating a heavy rainfall event for this week, where up to 4″ will be possible in Mid-Missouri, with the heaviest amounts centered along Interstate 44. These heavy amounts should aid in the dry conditions and place Mid-Missouri back near normal in terms of rainfall.
