Out-of-state roofer accused of scamming several in mid-Missouri

Missouri’s Attorney General’s Office filed criminal charges against the owner of a roofing company for taking tens of thousands of dollars from people in the Fulton area.

The complaint filed earlier this month accuses 45-year-old Jeffrey Maier of Stanley, North Carolina of four counts of deceptive business practices, felony theft and three counts of financial exploitation of a person older than 60. A probable cause statement from the Attorney General’s Consumer Complaint Division said in April and May of 2014, Maier took $27,708.42 from four victims after a hail storm pelted Fulton in early April. The NOAA reports hail greater than one inch falling on April 2 in and around Fulton.

One victim listed in the complaint confirmed to ABC 17 News that Maier came to their home in May 2014 with his company, Hailstrike Restoration, and estimated the damage for the family there. After paying him, the victim said Maier never performed the roofing work he promised.

The Better Business Bureau does not have rating for Hailstrike Restoration, listed as operating in Denver, NC, a town about 30 miles north of Charlotte. The BBB site has seven complaints, all of which describe Hailstrike taking money up front for work, and never following through with it.

The Attorney General’s Office will handle prosecution of the case, after a judge granted Callaway County Prosecutor Chris Wilson’s motion to hand off the case to that office.

Calls to different numbers listed for Hailstrike Restoration went either to a different business or to a number without a voicemail box set up.
