JC Council delays vote on street closure for pedestrian plaza
The Jefferson City council chose to not vote on controversial issue Monday night
Members were scheduled to decide whether or not to close Chestnut Street, a one way road that goes through Lincoln University’s campus.
After three hours of discussion, council members voted to put the issue on the informal calendar. Jefferson City Administrator Steve Crowell says the council could vote on the issue at their next council meeting in November.
If this measure passes, Jefferson City would hand over Chestnut Street to Lincoln University.
Chestnut Street passes right in front of the Quad and Memorial Hall.
The University wants to construct a pedestrian plaza for students and visitors.
The proposed agreement between the city and university said in return for the closure, the university would agree to half of the cost of improving Atchison and Locust Street, and sidewalk installation.
