Jefferson City council overrides mayor on budget

Jefferson City Mayor Carrie Tergin vetoed the budget Monday evening, before the city council voted to override the veto on a vote of 8-2.

The city council approved an approximately $60 million budget in early September. In her veto message, Mayor Tergin cited the Council’s move to increase the Gross Receipts Utility Tax, which is known as GRUT. Mayor Tergin wanted to keep the GRUT at its current level.

GRUT is a tax levied on the gross receipts of peoples, firms or corporations engaged in the business of selling and distributing natural gas, manufactured gas, steam, electricity, gas, telephone services or telecommmunication services for commercial, business, manufacturing, industrial, or any other purposes within the city.

Tergin proposed a $60 million budget, for all funds. The final budget must be approved by the end of October.
