Jefferson City Airport to temporarily halt flights amid repairs

As runway repair at the Jefferson City Memorial Airport nears its end, crews say the finishing touch will require a temporary shutdown.

The airport’s main runway has been closed for renovation since April and the smaller crosswind runway has been what planes used to take off and land.

Because the two intersect, however, both muct be shut down for 12 days while work on the main runway is completed.

“Now, we’re getting to the end of rebuilding what we can without affecting that crosswind runway because that do intersect,” saidBritt Smith with Jefferson City Public Works.

This shut down is expected to take place in early October at which time only helicopters will be able to fly in and out of the airport.

The total cost of the project is $7 million.

The Federal Aviation Administration is supplying 90 percent of that budget, MODOT is supplying 4 percent and the remaining 6 percent is from the city sales tax.
