Local health care providers offer coronavirus booster appointments for immune-compromised
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Several health organizations in Mid-Missouri are now offering appointments for booster shots to people with weakened immune systems.
The Pfizer or Moderna coronavirus vaccine can now be given at least 28 days after the first two doses if the patient is diagnosed with conditions that leave them more vulnerable to the virus because of their immune system.
Health organizations are encouraging individuals to talk to their health care provider about their medical condition, and whether getting an additional dose is appropriate for them or with any questions.
The recommendation is to get the third dose eight months after the second dose.
Those currently eligible for the additional COVID-19 vaccine include people who have:
- Been receiving active cancer treatment for tumors or cancers of the blood.
- Received an organ transplant and are taking medicine to suppress the immune system.
- Received a stem cell transplant within the last two years or are taking medicine to suppress the immune system.
- Moderate or severe primary immunodeficiency (such as DiGeorge syndrome, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome).
- Advanced or untreated HIV infection.
- Active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that may suppress your immune response.

Booster for everyone by September
U.S. health officials announced Wednesday that booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be offered for everyone by Sept. 20.
The decision is subject to authorization from the FDA and sign-off from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The officials said that the authorized Covid-19 vaccines are "remarkably effective in reducing risk of severe disease, hospitalization, and death, even against the widely circulating delta variant," but it's clear that protection against the coronavirus begins to decrease over time.
While the initial booster doses will be for the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, the officials said that they anticipate booster shots will be needed for those who received the single-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
