Man accused of stealing identity of Jefferson City Country Club members, employees

A man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly stealing the identity of eight Jefferson City Country Club members and employees.

22-year-old Travis Sumpter started working at the country club in June.

Sumpter allegedly created 8 credit card accounts under the names of members and employees.

ABC 17 News obtained court documents that said Sumpter had access to personal information on all members and employees.

Country club management found spam email from Paypal, Capital One, and American Express on the computer assigned to Sumpter.

Some of the names in the emails were addressed to members by name.

Court documents said a Capital One account was created under the name David Morris.

The correct birthday and correct social security number of a member was used.

The email used contained a “T” believed to stand for “Travis,” and “Wood” is the last name of Sumpter’s romantic partner.

Sumpter was contacted by police on multiple occasions with no answer. He agreed to show up for an interview on August 17, but did not appear.

Officers located Sumpter driving in the 4000 block of Catalina Drive and tried to stop him.

Sumpter ended up leading police on a chase that ended in the 5800 block of West Business 50.

Sumpter is charged with identity theft and has a pending fraud case out of Ladue.

Officials at the country club told ABC 17 News on Thursday they do not have a comment on the case.
