Severe storms possible Tuesday

After a quiet, dry week in Mid-Missouri, a more active pattern is settling in for this

A cold front stalled across the Missouri-Iowa border will begin to move in our direction Monday night into Tuesday. There is chance for some scattered storms out ahead of this front, especially in areas north of I-70 Monday night.

Some of those storms could be strong to severe, especially in areas along and north of Highway 24 where there is a marginal risk for isolated damaging winds and large hail.

Another strong upper level wave pushes into the region Tuesday into Tuesday night, helping to advance that cold front into Mid-Missouri.

In addition, the low level jet stream will kick in over Mid-Missouri overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, pulling in even more moisture to an already robust system.

All of those factors will lead to the possibility of heavy showers and thunderstorms Tuesday into early Wednesday, with the possibility of severe storms Tuesday afternoon into the evening. Much of Mid-Missouri north of Highway 54 is in a slight risk for severe storms Tuesday afternoon and evening, with all modes of severe weather possible including damaging winds greater than 58 MPH, large hail up to 1″ in diameter, and an isolated tornado or two.

Between 0.5 and 2″ of rain is possible between Monday night and Wednesday night.

Heavy rain moves out by early Wednesday evening, leaving us dry for Thursday.
