Suspect in foot pursuit charged with resisting arrest, violating parole

A suspect wanted for burglary was arrested shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday after a foot pursuit in Columbia.

Officers received a call for a suspicious person in the 2800 block of Jacobs Place around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon.

The suspicious person was seen trying to open patio doors to several apartments in the area.

The suspicious person was identified as Edward Cortez Jones, 32. Jones was on parole for burglary and an unlawful use of a weapon charge from 2014, and was arrested Friday by Columbia police for additional burglary charges.

He was released on bond.

A parole warrant had been issued for Jones Tuesday.

ABC17 News called several officials today to find out why he was released even though he was in violation of his parole, and why he was not identified as an absconder until Saturday and a warrant wasn’t released until Tuesday.

David Owen with the Missouri Department of Corrections said he could not comment on the parole violation due to state laws.

ABC17 also put in several calls to the Columbia police department, but it did not return any of them Wednesday.

Officers learned of the warrant while they were talking with Jones about the suspicious person call.

Officers attempted to take Jones into custody when he ran away on foot, leading officers on a foot chase.

Several officers set up a perimeter and chased the suspect into the surrounding woods, where they received minor injuries from the chase.

After Jones was eventually taken into custody, officers went to the 2600 block of Jacobs Place and found evidence related to the arrest of Jones.

Officers arrested Phillicia Warren, 19, at the scene for tampering as she was trying to remove evidence after officers told her not to touch it.

Police said Warren knows Jones. When officers went to arrest Warren, she resisted arrest and assaulted an officer.

Warren has since been charged with tampering with physical evidence, assaulting a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Jones has also been charged felony resisting arrest, and prosecutors have requested a $30,000 bond.

The officer was taken to a local clinic for treatment and was released.
