Columbia mayor declares Aug. 7 as Karissa Schweizer Day

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Mayor Brian Treece declared Aug. 7 as Karissa Schweizer Day during a press conference Friday morning.

Schweizer represented the University of Missouri in Columbia in track and cross country from 2014 to 2018 where she earned All-American honors eleven times. She also holds six records at the University and is a six-time NCAA Champion.

Schweizer qualified in the 5,000m and 10,000m runs in the U.S. Olympic trials. On Saturday, she will compete in the 10,000m run in Tokyo.

"As Karissa Schweizer runs her final event in the Tokyo Olympic Games, we wish her the best of luck," said Columbia Mayor Brian Treece. "The City is proud to have someone who has had such a positive impact on our community represent, not only Columbia and the University of Missouri, but also the entire nation."

Treece presented a signed copy of the proclamation Friday declaring Saturday as Karissa Schweizer Day to University of Missouri Track and Field Coach Brett Halter in the Council Chambers in City Hall.
