Boone County Deputies warn of telephone scam

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department is warning mid-Missouri residents about a telephone scam.

Boone County citizens have reported receiving phone calls from con artists who claim they’re with a legitimate business, charities or government agencies.

Scammers have also called people about fake arrest warrants that were issued for non-payment of income taxes or for not reporting to jury duty.

Residents are also receiving calls from criminals saying they have found a virus on their computer. Other scams include the caller telling the resident they had won a prize or vacation.

In each case, the caller attempts to collect personal information. They have asked for credit and debit card numbers to cover “fees.”

The sheriff’s department says to never give out personal information over the phone. Con artists become active during times of disasters, claiming to collect money for charitable organizations.

Government agencies will not call you asking for money.
